Luxurious,
light transmitting silk fabrics give vibrant results when dyed
or painted with acid dyes (find
out more about dyes) or decorated with silk paints or
screen printing inks (see
here for information and techniques). Other fabrics
such as Satin or Velvet can be manipulated with devorants which
remove the pile and leave the net backing to create pretty
devore fabric, which can then be dyed in two colours in one dye
bath!
The cotton fabrics range from the economical bleached cotton
and calico, which are ideal for the classroom, through to the
finely woven Javanese Prima and Primissima cotton for special
craft projects.
There are also a selection of polyesters and non-fabrics which
can also be printed on, painted or dyed. These include
polyester voile which can double up as screen mesh and the
wet-strength paper, tissutex.
